The Aurola Holiday Inn, now rebranded as Delta by Marriott San José Aurola, is a historic landmark in Costa Rica’s capital. Inaugurated in 1986, the hotel was one of the first international hotel chains to establish in the city. Strategically located in downtown San José, it played a key role in boosting the local economy, offering stunning views of the Central Valley and becoming a hub for diplomats, business travelers, and tourists. Its high-rise structure became synonymous with the city’s efforts to modernize and embrace global architectural trends.
A Design Transformation with Historical Roots
In 2023, Design Lab by Esteban Salazar led a remarkable transformation to elevate Aurola’s presence as part of the Delta by Marriott brand. Our team was tasked with redesigning key spaces like the lobby, reception area, Tropicana Bistro, La Palma Bar and other adjacent spaces. This project was not only about modernization but also about honoring the hotel’s connection to San José’s rich history. One of the main design inspirations came from El Pozo de Villanueva, an 18th-century well located near the hotel, once vital to local construction. We incorporated this historical reference into the reception area with a wall effect mimicking the flow of water, symbolizing continuity and renewal.
At the Tropicana Bistro, the industrial past of San José was a guiding influence, particularly the historic Fábrica Nacional de Licores, which once fueled the city’s development. We reflected this legacy through green and blue tones of glass partitions at the entrance of the space. The venue invites diners to experience a blend of history and modern comfort, while the playful central booths add a touch of elegance.
The Heart of the Hotel: La Palma Bar
La Palma Bar offers an intimate, mystical experience. Inspired again, by El Pozo de Villanueva, we chose soft green tones and golden accents, creating a refined yet approachable atmosphere. The oval bar, with its glowing tones, draws guests into a world of expertly crafted cocktails and lively conversation. The bar’s design, combined with custom graphic elements and soft lighting, brings the entire lobby to life, enhancing the guest experience.

Design Lab’s work on the Delta by Marriott San José Aurola represents a new standard for luxury hospitality in Costa Rica. By blending modern design with rich historical references, we’ve created a space that is both rooted in tradition and forward-thinking. This transformation has not only revitalized a historic landmark but also positioned the hotel as a standout destination, combining comfort, elegance, and a deep connection to San José’s vibrant past.
